Olive Oil
Growing awareness of the health benefits of olive oil and the increasing
popularity of the Mediterranean style diet have contributed to the
growth in demand for olive oil in recent years. Olive oil is a
prescription for health with its wide variety of valuable antioxidants
helping to protect against certain malignant tumours, lower the effects
on blood pressure, bolster the immune system and lower levels of total
blood cholesterol. Consumption of olive oil is also good for the
stomach, hepato-bilary system, pancreas, and intestines. It helps with
anti-aging, osteoporosis, cognitive function and skin damage.
Olive oil has a wide variety of uses mainly used for cooking. It is now
increasingly being used for flavoured oil dipping for bread, flavouring
for salads, olive oil sprays and cosmetics. World consumption of olive
oil continues moving upwards with a growing trend towards the
consumption of extra virgin olive oil.
Olive Oil Industry
Olive oil consumption is growing strongly around the world, with olive
oil supply generally not being able to keep up with consumption. With
Australia’s outstanding global reputation in food and agriculture and
Mediterranean-style climatic conditions, Australia is gradually
positioning itself to become a major global olive oil supplier.
Olive oil imports continue to dominate the supply of olive oil to
Australian consumers, with imports in 2004 totaling over 90% of
consumption. However, domestic demand for Australian-produced extra
virgin olive oil is growing rapidly through increasing consumer
acceptance of Australian manufactured oils and the increasing supply
allows for greater access for consumers.
The Project
You will become an olive grower in a commercial olive grove that is
expected to enter commercial production in 2010 by:
- sub-leasing two or more identifiable allotments of land of
approximately ¼ hectare each, called Grovelots;
- engaging Timbercorp to harvest and procure the processing of the
olives grown on your Grovelots, primarily into premium extra virgin
olive oil; and
- appointing Timbercorp to market the olive oil processed from your
Grovelots.
