Calypso
To date, the Kensington Pride mango, a tasty, low yielding variety with
a strictly limited shelf life, has dominated the Australian mango
market. After twenty years of research and development, the Calypso has
been produced to meet the demands of consumers and retailers. The
Calypso is an exciting new mango variety that combines superb flavour,
taste, smaller seed and firm, fibreless flesh with high blush and
exceptional yields.
Harvest Markets, part of the OneHarvest group and Timbercorp’s strategic
alliance partner, holds the exclusive rights to the Calypso mango. With
this more consistent, reliable and better quality product further growth
in demand is expected
Mango Industry
In the past decade, production of mangoes in Australia has grown from
nearly 2 million trays to approximately 7 million trays indicating the
strength of demand. The opportunity exists to exploit economies of scale
in the production, packing and marketing of mangoes so as to Increase
efficiencies and lower supply chain costs with the aim of supplying
large volumes of consistent grade 1 fruit. World demand for mangoes has
been increasing at an average of 8% annually.
Australian mangoes can be freely exported to a range of countries and
access to certain export markets which was previously denied to
Australia is now authorised. If Australia can provide export markets
with a reliable and consistent quality fruit, there are significant
counter-seasonal opportunities for mango exports to Asia and Europe.
